Well, I went to the county science fair today and it was pretty interesting really. Granted, there wasn’t a whole lot to do most of the day, but there were a lot of cool projects there and a whole lot of people. It’s hard to do a lot of commenting on it being on the student side of things, but I can give a little I suppose. We started off by just signing in and setting up, all that jazz, and then just did some walking around, touring the various projects. Then came the “lockdown”. We (the students) weren’t allowed to be in the exhibit area while the general judging was going on so we were all herded into a side room where we saw a program about birds and then pretty much sat the rest of the day. Luckily, due to most of us arriving fairly early, our school got the front rows of the room, so we had that at least. We were allowed outside though, so it was fairly easy to amuse ourselves playing somewhat of an excuse for a game of soccer with a rock. On of the teachers from our school came and called to us that they were about to start calling people in for interviews, so we went back inside. My partner and I were two of the first ones to be called. We seemed to have a longer interview than most people, though certainly not the longest. I guess that’s a good thing? Anyway, after just a little more waiting to get in a full “school day” we were cleared to go, so I came on home until I have to go back this evening for the awards ceremony to see how everything came out.
Doing this has really made me think a lot about my quite possible career in science. I guess I really can’t decide what I’m going to do (what else is new?). I certainly want to study science, especially animals (even though this experiment has nothing to do with them), but I just don’t want to be in a lab most of the time, with extremely limited free time. Unfortunately I hear a lot of scientists talking about how that is much of what they do. I suppose that wouldn’t be quite as bad as it seems to be stuck in my head, as I would still be passionate about the science, but I know being involved more in photography and such I would be more guaranteed of that field time, but I’m sure I wouldn’t be making near as much. I know I need to try to choose a job for wanting to do it and not money, but if I like two even related jobs and one makes a heck of a lot more than the other, it’s certainly a factor. I suppose only time will tell what I do, but I’m sure both science and photography/videography will be involved in some way.
