What’s With the Huge Craze Over Downloadable Media?

February 23, 2008 · 1 Comment

I still can’t figure it out. Well, I can, I suppose, but I still don’t agree with he answer. Why is everybody so crazy about moving to a completely downloadable lifestyle? With movements like iTunes for music and that and others for movies, there’s not much you can’t download these days. I, however, will probably never use these services unless hard media just dies completely. When I buy something, I want to get something physical in my hand that I can hold. Not just a file downloaded from the internet. If my hard drive crashes and al my music that I have no other copies of is gone, well, that’s just tough luck I suppose. I don’t know how many horror stories I’ve read about people loosing thousands of dollars of music bought off iTunes from a virus, their hdd dying, or, even worse, plain stupidity. Honestly, I laugh at them and just say, “should have bought a CD…” Yeah, yeah, I know with proper backing up this isn’t an issue, but let’s face it, a lot of people don’t back stuff up at all, and forget the price argument, a lot of CDs are almost as cheap as downloadable stuff now.The other issue here is quality. Compressed downloadable files just don’t have the audio quality that a CD does. I suppose some people can’t hear the difference, but I certainly can. This is especially true with video. These videos are certainly of a lower quality than what you’re going to get on a DVD, or especially a Blu-Ray disc. If I’m going to pay for a movie/song, I want the full quality thing, not a compressed version of it.I realize the reason behind the craze isĀ convenience, but honestly, why skip a small step when you can get something a whole lot better for a little more money/time. What amazes me even more is the people who think the only way they can get content on their iPods is by buying it off the iTunes store. People, you can import any CD that will fit in the slot into iTunes for no cost at all (other than buying the CD itself of course)! It keeps the convenience of iTunes and such with the benefits of hard media. Also, as a side note, it bug the poo out of me when people ask if you have an iPod as if it’s the only type of DAP (digital audio player) that exists. Other (sometimes better) ones DO exist. Yes, mine is an iPod (well, iPhone), I certainly realize that there are others out there. Just a little pet peeve there sort of related to the topic.

people switching to compressed mp3 files over actual CD’s is really going to effect the recording industry if it keeps up. When the songs are so compressed, is it worth spending $50,000 more on recording costs when you probably wont hear the difference?
